Theme Party Ideas

Out of this World Birthday

With a vintage-style rocket ship costume as inspiration, we went into orbit with the best universal theme in the galaxy!

  Costumes:
Kian's homemade rocket costume was constructed with foam core, foam, velcro, and sale fabric. More foam core, paint, elastic, and a headband with some wire on it is all it took to take the rest of the Barbieri Family into Outer Space.

We asked the guests to wear dark blue or black shirts, and upon arrival offered them glow in the dark star stickers (Oriental Trading Co.) to transform them into “galaxies”.

Decorations:
Outer Space Photo Wall (star backdrop paper from Shindigz)
Silver, black, and star-adorned balloons
Decorated the playstructure as a ‘space station’
Black Hole (dark bedroom so kids could see glow-in-dark stickers)

Food:

Solar System Soda (grape soda and mini colored marshmellow planets)
Little dippers in Milky Way sauce (Carrots and Ranch)
Rocket Chips
Asteroids (meatballs)
Jello Universe (clear Jello with star/moon mix=ins and grapes for planets)
Minor Bagles--previously known as Pluto Pizzas (Bagel Bites Pizzas)
Moon Cake (white cake tinted with black food coloring to become grey, an craters and mountain peaks formed by gently pressing different sized shot glasses in the frosting)

Make Your own Galaxy Sundaes (kids prefer ice cream to cake anyway, so for Kian’s birthdays we often do a sundae bar)
Galaxy ice cream (fudge ripple)
Moon Rocks (peanuts)
Black Holes (Chocolate Chips)
Tree Bark (Almonds)
Meteorites--explode on impact (chocolate Rice Krispies)
Peanut Butter Planets (Reese’s cereal)
Flying Saucers (mini oreos)
Rockets (candy corn)
Quasars (cinnamon candies)
Stars (star shaped cake topping)
Colored constellations (neon colored cake toppings)
Space Debris (black sprinkles)
Comet Creme (whipped creme)
Cement (marshmellow creme)
Chocolate/Strawberry Nebula (chocolate/starwberry syrup)
and, of course,
Moon Dirt (cake)

Games:
Blow Up the Rocket Pinata (I spray painted an American Rocket one from the Party store ($10) with silver spray paint and printed his picture in a ‘window’ to match Kian's costume)
Meteor Hunt (toss peanuts around the yard and watch the kids go nuts finding them all!)

Party Favors:
Light-up Galaxy Wands (Oriental Trading)
Glow-in-dark Bouncing balls (Oriental Trading)
Pop Rocks, Milky Way bars, starburst
