Halloween Costume

This all started when I was looking for something to add to my Amazon cart so I could get the super saver shipping. The ‘Ultimate Darth Vader’ kit (which had the voice changing helmet and chest plate plus a sound-effects light-up lightsaber) was on clearance for $15. So I knew what I wanted to be for Halloween!

To turn a 5’3” woman into the most menacing bad guy ever to hit the silver screen, I simply wore this ultimate Darth Vader helmet over a black turtleneck and sweats, made ‘armor’ plates out of scrap black vinyl and gold thread, adorned a thrift-store black belt with more vinyl and some faux stainless steel shelf paper, and made inner and outer capes with $1/yard black lining fabric.

The piece de resistance, however, was in taking an old footstool, painting it black, and nailing (yes, nailing) thrift store boots ($3!) to the fronts so I could stand on the stool and be over 6’ tall. I used some of the cape fabric to drape around the sides of the footstool so it looked like a continuation of my inner robes.

The most expensive item was the Darth Vader gloves, for which I could find no substitute for the licensed Halloween ones. At least I found them on the Internet for only $16 shipped (they are $20 retail).

Total cost for my ‘ultimate’ Darth Vaderess costume? $39 (less than the original price for the helmet alone!).

To turn Doug into Obi-Wan I followed some internet instructions on how to make Jedi tunics and sewed it from sale linen and some leftover ‘saddle’ fabric for leather straps. The robe was a meaty purchase of some 6 yards of fabric (luckily only $4 a yard with coupon instead of the $8 of regular price), for which I just kinda faked a robe pattern (it just drapes anyway, right?). Oh but the robe looked so good!
To complete the outfit he wore regular tan pants from his closet, his Han Solo Boots, and used a left over birthday lightsaber as a prop. A can of white hair spray and some white make-up spread over a week’s worth of beard was all it took to bring balance to the force--er, uh, costume. Authentic Jedi costume for under $40.

What was the most fun aspect of being a married couple playing Darth Vader and Obi-wan?

The possibilities.... :)

Oh, it’s just soooo wrong!../party%20ideas/EF913530-059D-11DC-9D6C-000D93520F52.html840F3E1F-0448-11DC-9D6C-000D93520F52.html6D28EDCE-0447-11DC-9D6C-000D93520F52.html../party%20ideas/EF913530-059D-11DC-9D6C-000D93520F52.htmlshapeimage_2_link_0shapeimage_2_link_1shapeimage_2_link_2shapeimage_2_link_3
