Mardi Gras Costume

When I found this gaudy black and gold silk chinese robe at a thrift store (for only $5 because it had a fixable tear on the side), and this ridiculous leopard print sparkly pant suit at a garage sale for $8 (that happened to be in size 10 PETITE!), I took it as a sign that, well, the only place I could get away with either was at Mardi Gras!

To complete Doug's look, I then found some $1 women's pants that I put elastic around the legs to make 'pantaloons', found an additional scimitar at a garage sale for $.50 to match the existing one, doctored up the previous year's tie-on mask with chinese characters straight from the robe, and made a black tie (the robe didn't come with one) out of left-over French Maid fabric.

To complete my "Reject-from-Cats" look, I put hot- rollers in my hair and sprayed it with gold hair spray (huge, isn't it?), and just faked my way through a cat face with Wet-n-Wild bronzer, eye shadow, and clown make-up. Not to mention the very useful Delenn brown suede boots. Don't know why I didn't win 'best homemade mask', but I suspect it was because most people didn't realize this counted as a 'mask'.
