Theme Party Costume

A friend born in 1970 decided to have her monumental 30th birthday party be one to celebrate the funky 1970s decade! Hmmm. Now, this is a hard one. Where oh where would I be able to find old 70's clothes!?!?

Well, needless to say, of course I once again frequented thrift stores. I found old army fatigues where I could sew on the Vietnam Veteran's and American Flag patches I already had to transform Doug into a Vietnam protester. His dogtags were actually a souvenir I had made 10 years before at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington (ironic, isn't it?). I found the tie-dye shirt in a $1 bin, but since it had some phony company logo on it, I turned it inside out and got iron-on letters at Long's to make the "Make Love Not War" slogan.

His dramatic hair was the resurrected Indian wig and headband with the pony-tail holders taken out of it. This outfit seemed to allow Doug to easily adopt an abrasive, rebellious asshole character (it was the costume! I swear!)

My outfit was even easier. A funky rainbow polyester shirt, a jean vest (where I ripped out the seams for the frayed look, and added happy face patches I already owned), bell bottom pants, and platform boots. Though it took 2-3 stores to assemble this monstrosity, it only lightened my wallet by about $10 (including the shoes!!!) 7579EC74-0445-11DC-9D6C-000D93520F52.htmlshapeimage_2_link_0
